Crown House in Huddersfield to Become Student Flats

Crown House, a former government building in Huddersfield town centre, is to be transformed into student accommodation.

Before its closure in 2019, the 11-storey building was home to the Huddersfield Job Centre.

After its construction in the 1970s, the building was previously utilised by the Department for Work & Pensions.

Despite several planning applications since the closure, none have progressed until now.

Abode Manchester 2 Ltd has submitted plans to Kirklees Council to create 198 studio flats over nine floors for student-only living accommodation.

The studios will range from 20 sq metres to 31 sq metres and have en-suite bathrooms, desk areas, kitchen facilities, built-in storage, and modern design features.

The planning application states the building will be aimed at international students, and new cladding on the frontage will complement the design of the National Health Innovation Campus.

The inside of the building is said to be in a neglected state currently showing signs of vandalisation.

Public consultation into the plans ended in early March and a decision for the application is expected in May 2023.
